I'm not sure whether Update Manager is a Gnome thing or an Ubuntu thing (I think it is an Ubuntu thing), but I'm quite sure it is an annoying thing.
To whit, once you log on, it generally makes a pain of itself telling you there are updates available until you capitulate and agree to install these updates. Once you've started that process, you may think you can minimise the window whilst it's busy so you can get on with your day, but no. Instead, it grabs focus and pops itself to the top of your window z-list every time something happens. Look! I downloaded the cups-bsd package! Look! I installed the headers package for your new kernel! Look! I've finished! Look! Look! Look!
It's not like I don't have enough problems concentrating what with IRC, email, and the Internet. I really don't need any more distraction.
Meh. I'm moving to Slackware.
