K and R, or: Fully Qualified C Coder

Sun Mar 1 01:31:51 GMT 2009

Fantastic -- whilst in the Oxfam bookshop today I managed to locate a book I've been waiting to find second hand for ages: Kernighan and Richie's The C Programming Language. I remember reading it at University (I'd borrowed it from a friend) and suddenly understanding function pointers. It was a revelation.

Since then, of course, C has become almost entirely second nature to me, and I rarely need to turn to reference materials. Whilst I could never quite justify the price of the book were I to buy it new, it has always niggled me slightly that I don't own a copy. It's just something you should have as a C coder -- in the same sense that an architect ought have a T-square and retractable pencil, every C programmer ought to own a copy of K and R. It's kind of like a badge of honour.
